「この偉業は私一人の功績ではありません。すべての道のりは、兄のエドウィン・マルティネス・アルバラードと共に築き上げてきました。私たちは共に歩んできたので、私にとってこの偉業は私たちだけのものではなく、私たち二人の功績なのです。」と、若き農園のオーナー、ネリー・マルティネス氏（22歳）は言います。

マルティネス兄弟はコーヒー生産者として、わずか 0.85エーカーの土地から、つつましいスタートを切りました。サンタバルバラ、ラスベガスでは、多くのCOE受賞者がおり、コーヒーが重要な役割を果たしていることを実感してきました。このことが、スペシャルティコーヒー作りを続けるモチベーションとなってきました。農園は開設から10年経ちますが、今では 3.5エーカーほどの土地にパカス、そしてゲイシャ種を育てています。

彼らの農園は、標高、品種、微小気候など、カップ・オブ・エクセレンスを生み出すための本質的な資質を備えていますが、とりわけ標高の高い、比較的新しいエリアのため、車は入れず1時間ほどかけて急斜面の岩場を徒歩で登りようやく農園に辿り着く過酷な環境にあります。
しかしながら努力を続け、この偉業を達成したラスベガスの多くの生産者の仲間入りができたことに感謝し、誇りに思っています。
COE受賞ロットのほとんどがゲイシャ種という昨今の状況のなか、サンタバルバラを代表する品種であるパカス種での受賞は貴重なものだと考えます。

“This achievement is not mine alone. Every step of the journey was built together with my brother, Edwin Martinez Alvarado. Because we walked this path together, this accomplishment belongs not just to me, but to both of us,” says young farm owner Nelly Martinez, 22.

The Martinez brothers started modestly as coffee producers on just 0.85 acres of land. In Santa Barbara, Las Vegas, they witnessed firsthand how coffee plays a vital role, with many Cup of Excellence winners. This has been their motivation to continue crafting specialty coffee. Though the farm is now 10 years old, they cultivate Pacas and Geisha varieties across approximately 3.5 acres.

Their farm possesses the essential qualities for producing Cup of Excellence coffee—elevation, variety, microclimate—but it’s located in a relatively new, high-altitude area. Access is extremely challenging: vehicles cannot reach it, requiring a grueling one-hour hike up steep, rocky slopes to finally arrive at the farm.

Nevertheless, we are grateful and proud to have persevered and joined the ranks of Las Vegas’s many producers who have achieved this feat.

Given the current trend where most COE-winning lots are Geisha varieties, we consider winning with Pacas—a variety representative of Santa Barbara—to be particularly valuable.
