この小さな町は、エルサルバドルで非常に有名な芸術家フェルナンド・リョルトが1970年代にこの町にもたらした、非常に特有の様式で制作された芸術と壁画で知られています。

この芸術様式は、しばしば「ナイーブ」（すなわち子供らしい）と表現され、キュビスムの影響を受けています。それは幾何学的で二次元的であり、大胆な色彩が特徴です。その主なテーマは自然、日常生活、宗教であり、エルサルバドルで最も認知され、同義語となっている芸術様式となっています。

近年、人口の3分の4がこの様式の芸術制作に従事しており、松材（箱、十字架）やコピノールの種子に制作されています。エルサルバドルではどこでも購入できますが、その多くはこの小さな町で製造されています。

歴史的にも重要な地域で、内戦の解決に顕著な役割を果たしたことから、エルサルバドルの歴史において大きな重要性を有しています。1980年からゲリラのイデオロギー活動の拠点となり、後には反乱者と軍隊との戦闘の戦場として機能しました。

今回のロットはクスカトレコというT5256系統のF1品種。コーヒーの育種において、T5296は重要なコーヒー葉の錆びにくい植物ですが、世代を超えて安定していないため、農家には推奨されません。Cuscatleco と Parainema は、エルサルバドルとホンジュラスの各国育種プログラムによってそれぞれ作られた T5296の系統です。

A coffee producer cultivating in the quiet area of San Fernando, La Palma, near the Honduran border. Currently growing Pacamara, Geisha, and Cuscatleco varieties.

La Palma is a municipality in the department of Chalatenango, El Salvador. Located in the country’s mountainous region, it covers an area of 135.60 km² and had a population of approximately 24,000 as of 2006.

This small town is renowned for its distinctive art and murals, created in a highly unique style introduced by the famously renowned Salvadoran artist Fernando Llort in the 1970s.

This artistic style is often described as “naive” (meaning childlike) and influenced by Cubism. It is characterized by geometric, two-dimensional forms and bold colors. Its main themes are nature, daily life, and religion, making it the most recognized and synonymous artistic style in El Salvador.

In recent years, three-quarters of the population engage in creating art in this style, working on pine wood (boxes, crosses) and copinole seeds. While it can be purchased anywhere in El Salvador, much of it is produced in this small town.

Historically significant, this region played a prominent role in resolving the civil war, making it highly important in El Salvador’s history. From 1980, it served as a base for guerrilla ideological activities and later as a battlefield for clashes between rebels and the military.

This lot features the F1 variety Cuscatleco, derived from the T5256 lineage. In coffee breeding, T5296 is a significant rust-resistant plant, but it is not recommended for farmers because it lacks stability across generations. Cuscatleco and Parainema are T5296 derivatives developed by the national breeding programs of El Salvador and Honduras, respectively. Furthermore, many new F1 hybrid varieties were created by crossing T5296 with Ethiopian landraces (examples include Centroamericano, Milenio, and Mundo Maya). T5296 originated in the early days of the Central American regional consortium “PROMECAFE,” established in 1978 with funding from USAID’s Regional Office for Central America Program (ROCAP) and Brazil’s Instituto Agronômico de Campinas (IAC). This consortium was formed to address the threat posed by the recent arrival of coffee leaf rust in the region.
