インドコーヒー発祥の地ババブダンギリにあるグンゲギリ農園。

古代神話によれば、ムリガンダ・ムリバーという賢者が苦行のすえ、ガンジスの水をグンゲリの地に引き込んだという言い伝えがある。そこから「グンゲギリ」という農園名にした。農園内を通る川がもたらす豊富な水源に野生の孔雀が引き寄せられてくる。7月－10月のモンスーンの季節には1100-1400ミリの雨量がある。年間の気温幅は16℃～32℃まであり、11月から1月は16℃まで下がり、2 月から5月には32℃になる。栽培品種はＳ７９５、Sln９、カチモール、ＢＢＴＣ、カツーラ、チャンドラギリ。農園の上にある寺院（Panchalingaswar)は、インドの聖仙マールカンデーヤ（インドの聖典に登場する聖人）生誕の地と言われている。

さらに、コーヒー豆は南西ガーツ山脈の川に浸された土壌で育ち、アレカナッツ、イチジク、ネロリの木など、さまざまな植物の木陰で熟成される。これにより、甘くバランスの取れたエキゾチックなカップ・プロファイルが生まれる。この農園には、美しい孔雀をはじめ、さまざまな鳥が生息している。

＜農園の歴史＞

カラディカン農園は、サンガメシュワ―社が所有する農園のひとつ。同社は４つの農園（グンゲギリ農園、カラディカン農園、コンダカン農園、アッティカン農園）を所有している。

グンゲギリ農園、カラディカン農園、コンダカン農園は1890年に英国人のクロフォード兄弟（チャールズ＆ウィリアム）によって始められ、現オー ナーであるアパドゥライ氏の祖父がインド独立（1947）後に取得したもの。

アッティカン農園も同じく英国人のモリス親子（ラドルフ＆エリック）によって 始められ、1960年に取得した。1981年に４つの農園を統合して、サンガメシュワ―コーヒー農園という企業形態にした。

Gungegiri Estate in Bababudangiri, the birthplace of Indian coffee.

According to an ancient myth, a wise man named Muliganda Mulivar drew the waters of the Ganges into the land of Gungegiri after a period of hardship. This is where the name “Gungegiri” comes from. The abundant water source from the river that runs through the farm attracts wild peacocks, which receive 1100-1400mm of rainfall during the monsoon season from July to October. Annual temperatures range from 16°C to 32°C, dropping to 16°C from November to January and reaching 32°C from February to May. Cultivars grown are S795, Sln9, Kachimol, BBTC, Katsula, and Chandragiri. The temple (Panchalingaswar) above the plantation is said to be the birthplace of the Indian saint Maarkandeya (a saint mentioned in Indian scriptures).

 Further, the coffee beans grow in soil soaked by the rivers of the South Western Ghats and are ripened in the shade of various plants like areca nut, fig and neroli trees. This gives the coffee a sweet, balanced and exotic cup profile. The estate is home to various birds, including the beautiful peacock.

<History of the Estate>

Kaladikan Estate is one of the plantations owned by Sangameshwar. The company owns four plantations (Gungegiri, Kaladikan, Kondakan, and Attikan).

The Gungegiri, Kaladikan, and Kondakan plantations were started in 1890 by the Crawford brothers (Charles and William), who are British, and were acquired by the grandfather of the current owner, Appadurai, after India’s independence (1947).

In 1981, the four farms were merged to form the Sangameshwar Coffee Estate.
